Raymond School Renovation Underway

A number of jobs, aimed at providing viable office space for town employees, are now complete on this historic school building.  These steps include:

  • Removal of liberally applied asbestos from many places in the building including the original heating system, gypsum wall materials, floor tiles and the roof shingles
  • Removal of the 1939-era oil-fired steam heat boiler.  This will, ultimately, be replaced with a modern, energy efficient heat-pump based system
  • Removal of the now unnecessary chimney which would now serve only as a source of leakage at the roof line and a possible heat loss
  • Replacement of the old asbestos based roofing with modern roofing materials and a very modent venillation system that will allow the attic space to be completely insulated from the building while providing adequate airflow to protect the roofing materials

We now move on to the next steps which should start to lead to getting employees installed in this building.  Unfortunately a lack of available funding does not allow us to complete this in one large project so, once again, we will take a phased approach.  These next steps will be preceeded by an engineering design, complete with constructions drawings.  This phase will include a quite a number of steps:

  • Excavation work around the exterior to repair a failed drainage system that has allowed water to accumlute on the lower level
  • The placing of an emergency backup generator at the rear of the building so that it will be available when the complete electrical system is completed in the future
  • Completel demolition of the interior of the building to allow construction work to begin
  • Weatherization of the building including insulation, weatherization of the windows and some repair and weather stripping of the exterior doors
  • The construction of a modern, ADA-compliant bathroom
  • Some temporary heating devices on the upper floor.

This work certainly will not turn the old schoolhouse into a modern office building but it will permit us to begin to move employees in if necessary.

Stayed tuned for more!
