 Information

Information from the Royalston Open Space & Recreation Plan
Prepared by the Town of Royalston Open Space & Recreation Committee and McGregor & Associates, P.C.

The plan reflects the town's desire to protect, maintain, and diversify the open space available to its citizenry. Royalston acknowleges the value of existing open spaces in terms of aesthetics, health, welfare, the economy, and recreation. At the same time, it recognizes the need to maintain lands in active use, and to balance local fiscal realities and tax-base concerns with conservation efforts. The full plan offers an overview of Royalston's history, physical development, environmental characteristics and full open space and recreation area inventory.

The plan serves both as a vehicle to make Royalston more eligible for state and federal funding, and as an information resource for additional government planning.

The plan identifies goals to strive towards during the next five years. The action plan will help guide the town in achieving these goals effectively and efficiently. Goals identified by Royalston residents include the following:

- Preserving working landscapes and open fields
- Enhancing recreational facilities
- Protecting clean water and air
- Protecting the small-town character, scenic views, wildlife habitat and rare species in Royalston
- Improving public information about trails and other outdoor opportunities
- Engaging in cooperative protection efforts like town purchase of land and zoning changes to protect open space.

A full copy of the plan is available at the Phineas S. Newton Library on the Royalston Common, or you can download an electronic (.PDF - 395K) version by clicking here (you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader free software to read it; to obtain this software, visit http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.
